Early childhood centre work isn’t the only job within the early childhood industry

childcare worker

If you love being around children and enjoy nurturing their development, a career in the early childhood industry could be just what you’ve been looking for. Job prospects for a childcare worker are strong too. According to the Job Outlook website, the number of job openings for childcare workers is expected to be high in the coming years. Over the next 5 years, to May 2022, around 168,000 job openings are likely over this time from workers leaving and new jobs being created.

If you become a childcare worker, that doesn’t mean your only job prospects are working within a child care centre either. There’s a whole range of job opportunities in the early childhood industry that are not based within a structured centre environment at all.

Some of these might include:

Family day care

If you’re looking for a job with the ultimate level of flexibility and control, why not start your own family day care service? As a family day care worker, your business operates from within your own home environment. This means you’ll have the ability to choose which hours and days you work. And because it’s your own business, you’ll have complete control over the way it operates in many other ways too. If you have your own children, you can even look after them while you’re caring for others at the same time.

Holiday programs and before and after school care

Being a childcare worker doesn’t mean you’re limited to only working with children under the age of six either. School-aged children also require care from qualified individuals at holiday programs and before and after school care services all around the country. These services might operate from within schools, or at sports venues or community centres. Before and after school care offers split shift working arrangements and employment can be on a casual or permanent basis.

Holiday programs run during school holiday periods. They can be centre-based, sports focused or run completely outdoors. They also offer a range of hours and shifts based on your availability and the needs of the service.

Become a nanny

Working as a Nanny offers varied employment with many flexible working arrangements. You can choose roles with a range of different families, with both live in or live out options available. You’ll get to know the children you’re caring for on a much deeper level, and every day is sure to be different. You’ll take the children on outings, deliver them to and from school and assist with their education and learning. Nannies are needed all over the country and right around the world, so there’s no limit to where your job could take you.
