Course Summary

This qualification covers workers who use organisation policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes. Depending on the setting, workers may work under direct supervision or autonomously.

In order to successfully complete the program students must have access to a regulated education and care setting catering for children aged 0-6 years to undertake 120 hours of mandatory work placement. During work placement students are required to work across different age groups of children. The approximate allocation is 40% (0-2 years of age) and 60% (2-6 years of age).

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements however it is recommended that all applicants have sound computer / literacy / numeracy skills.

Applicants must be prepared to complete a range of duties related to their study for this qualification. The role of a Childcare Educator can include, (but is not limited to), maintaining a safe, clean and hygienic environment; adapting to using low furniture and be prepared to sit on the floor; coping with body fluids, odours and close physical contact, withstanding high levels of noise for extended periods of time; guiding children’s behaviour in cooperation with other staff and parents; have the capacity to supervise children and keep them safe.

All people employed in early childhood environments have great responsibility for infants and children from six weeks to school age. The Community Services and Health ITAB advise that to work in Early Childhood Education and Care, persons must be 16 years or over and meet all the legislated requirements which includes the Working with Children Check.

Young people under the age of 18 years working in child related employment are exempt from the requirement for a Working With Children Check (WWCC). However, once they turn 18, people working with children (including trainees and students undertaking a work placement) must have a WWCC clearance number. Individuals seeking child-related employment can apply for a WWCC online for any employee/trainee/student aged 17 years 9 months or older. Further information available at

Study Pathways; Students who successfully complete this qualification could progress their studies to CHC50113 – Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

Study Modes

Study modes for this qualification include: –

Classroom based learning – Allows for a Trainer-led approach where the Trainer and the student meet in a classroom for a specific duration of time in a common location. Classroom based learning allows students to participate in group activities, group learning and group discussions.

Self-paced learning  Self-paced learning allows learners the flexibility to study at times that are suitable. Learners can work through learning material independently knowing that a dedicated Trainer and Assessor is available for support if required. Print based or computer based learning materials are available. This style of study suits students who have good time management skills and who don’t need structured face to face sessions.

Employment Based Traineeship – An employment based traineeship allows for delivery on the job (Central Coast and Newcastle regions only) with a Trainer and Assessor conducting workplace monitoring and assessments visits. Duration – 12 months full time (part time traineeships also available)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – RPL is suitable for those who already have the skills, knowledge and experience and who can provide current evidence of competence. RPL is available for part of, or a full qualification.
